About The Workshop

A two-day national workshop on “Green Steel Production via Decarbonization for Sustainable and Circular Economy (GSP2024)” will be organized at IIT ISM Dhanbad on 16th-17th December 2024 (Monday and Tuesday) to understand the indigenously developed green steel production and advancements in bio-coal and bio-coke production technologies to reduce GHG emissions. The workshop includes presentations, poster sessions as well as panel discussions on initiatives and the role of CSR funds in uplifting the economic status of the Jharkhand Tribal Population for a sustainable economy. The proposed discussion on green steel production, bio-coal, and bio-coke production technologies will cater the needs of Government of India initiatives such as “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, “Vocal for Local”, and “Swachh Bharat”. The workshop will have keynote addresses from distinguished academicians, scientists, prominent industry experts, and policymakers from India. As per the National Steel Policy, the goal is to achieve 300 MT of crude steel capacity by 2030-2031 compared to 140 MT in 2023-2024. As the global demand for steel continues to rise, prioritizing decarbonization in steel production is essential for meeting climate goals, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring the long-term viability of the industry. This transformation underscores the commitment to sustainable development and paves the way for a cleaner, more resilient industrial future by integrating innovative technologies and processes that minimize carbon emissions in the steel industry.

The overall goals of the workshop include:
  • Facilitating interaction among different stakeholders to provide technological and innovative solutions through collaboration between academia and the research community.
  • Analyzing current industrial challenges and technology needs related to bio-coal production, bio-coke production, and green steel production.
  • Analyzing sources of carbon emissions in steel production and implementing carbon conversion and utilization technologies.
  • Promoting enrichment of DRI fines for iron production and as a steel-making route.
  • Creating self-sustainable economic models and technologies for vanadium recovery, exploring the full potential of LD slag for effective steel waste management for the circular economy.
  • Developing indigenous technologies to support central government initiatives such as Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Swachh Bharat, National Hydrogen Energy Mission, NCAP, Swastha Bharat, Jal Jeevan Mission, Unnat Bharat, and Vocal for Local.
