Ph.D. in Physics

Selection for the admission to the Ph.D. (Physics) is through the national level entrance examinations such as GATE, NET/JRF, CSIR etc. followed by a comprehensive viva-voce. Students completing their M.Sc./M.Tech. degrees in IITs and other eminent institutes may also apply for Ph.D. in the department. The students registered for Ph.D. will receive a monthly fellowship as per the guidelines of the institute.

The Department of Physics offers Ph.D. in various disciplines such as Solid-State Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics and Photonics, Laser and Plasma Physics, Biophysics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Computational Material Science, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, etc. The institute owns Central Research Facility (CRF) which is equipped with a wide range of advanced research facilities including XRD, HRTEM, FESEM, UV-VIS-NIR Spectrometer, Raman Spectroscopy, EPMA, SPM, HRMS, etc. to facilitate experimental researches in various areas. In addition, the institute has central High Performance Computational (HPC) facility for theoretical and computational modelling and simulations.

Department of Physics has been regularly publishing research articles in reputed peer reviewed national and international journals of high impact factors. Some of the research works of the department has also been acknowledged by Govt. of India and highlighted by national and international media. Our Ph.D. students have won laurels at national and international levels. Many of them have obtained post-doctoral positions in prestigious universities in India and abroad. In addition, many of our students have successful carriers in academia and industrial sectors.
