We are eager to work with inquisitive minds at all academic levels; please continue reading to know about the different levels at which you may work with us. Â In case you have any query/ wish to seek any clarification in this regard, please feel free to drop an email (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in)
Prospective Post-doctoral fellows
Please write to me (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in) with your CV and research proposal (1-2 pages). The ideal candidate would be someone with a PhD (defended/thesis submitted/on the verge of thesis submission) in Chemical Engineering/Applied Mathematics/Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/allied disciplines, with research area relating to fluid mechanics/transport phenomena. Strong skillset in fluid mechanics/applied mathematics/programming (C/C++/MATLAB/COMSOL) is highly desirable.Â
I am willing to take in candidates through either of the following schemes
  - Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship (IPDF) scheme of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (https://people.iitism.ac.in/~research/post-doctoral-fellowship.php)
     - National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (NPDF) scheme , funded by SERB (https://serbonline.in/SERB/npdf)
      - Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Post-Doctoral Fellowship scheme , funded by UGC (https://frg.ugc.ac.in/)
  - NBHM Postdoctoral Fellowship, funded by DAE (http://www.nbhm.dae.gov.in/postdoct.html)
Prospective PhD scholars
Applications for PhD admissions are received round the year through the online portal, and are processed on a monthly basis by the department. Please refer to the institute PhD admissions portal for further details and the latest guidelines (https://admission.iitism.ac.in/index.php/admission/phd)
Students who have done B.Tech/M.Tech in any branch of engineering, or MSc. in any branch of science are eligible to do a PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering. However, the rules may change from time to time; please visit the web-portal of PhD admissions for further details and latest information (https://admission.iitism.ac.in/index.php/admission/phd).
Note that PhD admissions are carried out centrally by the institute. In case you wish to do a PhD with me, you need to give your choice for a PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering.Â
Candidates interesting in working with me for their PhD should drop an email to me (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in), attaching the CV.Â
All students admitted under the IA (Institute Assistantship) category get the MoE fellowship as per rules. Some students may be eligible to receive Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) in due course. Please note that the scheme is competitive; you may check further details regarding the scheme at https://www.pmrf.in/
PG Students [internal students, i.e., those already enrolled at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad]
Please drop an email to me (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in) with your CV.
UG Students [internal students, i.e., those already enrolled at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad]
Undergraduate students (pursuing B.Tech/B.E.) interested in working with me should drop an email (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in), attaching the CV.Â
Ideally, one can start working with me right from the second year of their BTech, as that would give them sufficient time (2-2.5 years) in acquiring the necessary skills and gaining some valuable research experience.
Some background and motivation in fluid mechanics and mathematics are essential, and interest/prior knowledge in computer programming (C/C++/MATLAB/COMSOL) will be immensely helpful. However, these are not a barrier for motivated and passionate individuals who are willing to learn and pick up these skills.
Summer/Winter/Long-term research internship
Candidates having background in Chemical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Civil Engineering/Applied Mathematics and allied branches may write to me (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in).

Please note that IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has a dedicated research internship scheme for admitting undergraduate and postgraduate students, from both within the institute and outside of the institute. Selection is competitive; the details of the programme are available at https://people.iitism.ac.in/~download/news_and_events/notices/01-03-2024-05:03:31_notices.pdf
Apart from the above, others can also write to me (souravsengupta@iitism.ac.in), expressing their willingness to do an internship with me. However, it is desirable that you are willing to devote time (remotely, physical presence on the campus in not necessary) even after the formal duration of the internship ends, as a particular research problem usually cannot be completed within 6-8 weeks, and working on the research problem beyond the scheduled period will help you in getting valuable research experience and making some fruitful contribution to the area.
