Future Roadmap

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad envisions a future where sustainability is embedded in every dimension of its growth. By aligning with global best practices and fostering innovation, the institute aims to emerge as a national leader in campus sustainability and environmental responsibility. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is committed towards building a model sustainable campus that integrates green infrastructure, clean energy, waste-free systems, and climate resilience into all academic, operational, and community functions.

Strategic Goals (2025–2035)

  • Increase solar power capacity to 2 MW+ with advanced solar farms and building-integrated photovoltaics.
  • Install smart microgrids for efficient energy distribution and demand response.
  • Incorporate Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) in all major buildings.
  • Implementation of hybrid diesel-gas based generating units.
  • Implementation of Battery Energy Storage System

  • Expand and optimize rainwater harvesting and aquifer recharge systems.
  • Treat and reuse 100% of greywater and blackwater through decentralized STPs.
  • Install smart water meters and leak detection systems campus-wide.

  • Set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to segregate and recycle campus waste.
  • Implement compulsory waste segregation at source in all hostels and departments.
  • Scale up waste-to-compost and biogas units for organic waste.

  • Increase vegetative cover to 40% of campus area through regular plantation drives and biodiversity parks.
  • Develop a Campus Biodiversity Corridor connecting green zones and ecological habitats.
  • Launch a Living Lab for Urban Ecology in collaboration with research departments.

  • Establish a green transport policy to reduce private vehicle use on campus.
  • Introduce campus-wide e-bikes and expansion of EV shuttle systems with solar charging points.
  • Cycle-sharing pilot initiatives to reduce dependence on motorized transport.
  • Expand pedestrian zones, bicycle lanes, and carpool incentives.

  • Launch a Center of Excellence in Climate and Sustainability Studies.
  • Fund interdisciplinary research on clean energy, climate resilience, and environmental remediation.
  • Encourage student-led innovations and green startups through incubation support.

  • Integrate sustainability modules and electives across UG/PG programs.
  • Organize annual green hackathons, workshops, and global sustainability lectures.
  • Promote student research projects aligned with SDGs and campus priorities.

  • Join international sustainability networks (e.g., UI GreenMetric, ISCN).
