IIT(ISM) is located in the heart of Dhanbad city, the Coal Capital of India. Despite being located amid the city, the campus has a life of its own with hustling bustling greenery, a proactive student family that is always involved in conducting various interesting events all year round, and the people for whom the campus is a source of livelihood. Connectivity

Dhanbad, being one of the largest cities of the East Indian state of Jharkhand, is well connected with the rest of the state and the rest of the country through Air, Rail, and Roads.

Airways


  • The nearest airport available to Dhanbad is Kazi Nazrul Islam Domestic Airport (located at 97 km away) located at Andal region of Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
  • The other nearest airports available are Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi (located 140 km away) or Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (located 269 km away) in Kolkata.
  • If a person uses the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, then after landing, one can proceed to take a train or a bus to Dhanbad, either of which would involve a 4-5 hours journey.
  • If one chooses to use the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata instead (which has International connectivity with most major Asian countries), one can take a shuttle to Howrah Railway Station (situated 16.5 km away) and then take a train to Dhanbad, which should take around 4-5 hours.

Railways


Dhanbad Junction Railway Station, located just 2.8 km from the IIT (ISM) Campus, is the nearest railway station. It is the largest railway station in the state and has regular local as well as long-distance trains running through it, connecting it with the rest of the country. Taxis are readily available 24/7 to take you from the Railway Station to the campus, where one can also avail online cab services like Ola. Unacquainted visitors are requested to book their railway tickets well in advance, as soon as they are available, in order to ensure confirmations of their reservations.
In order to book a ticket online, follow the following steps:

  • Register at the IRCTC website and log in.
  • On the homepage, enter the source and destination station. The code for Dhanbad station is DHN. Select a train. Select the class of travel.
  • Fill the passenger details and click on Pay.
  • Railway tickets can be booked as early as 120 days before the date of the journey.
  • The IRCTC mobile application called IRCTC Connect is also available on iOS and Android for download. The process to book a ticket remains the same.

Roadways


  • Dhanbad, being a major city in the middle of Jharkhand’s coal belt, has a good road network connecting it with all major cities nearby. National Highway 18 and National Highway 19 are the major highways running through it, connecting it with cities like Ranchi (the state capital), Kolkata (the capital of the nearby state of West Bengal), Jamshedpur, Bokaro, etc. There are plenty of buses plying on these roads, connecting these cities.
  • Online portals and mobile applications like redBus can be used to book one’s bus tickets for travel to and from Dhanbad in a hassle-free manner.
